Years should be mentioned

[edit]

On a quick reading of the article, i found that at many places the year the event took place should be mentioned. Instead of adding {{when}} tags through out, i thought i would leave a note here. (Wasn't sure if such tagging would be welcome by a new editor to this page or not.) For example, his early career years are referred with his age instead of the actual year. Its a bad writing style to make readers pick up their calculators every time when some reference can be given easily by stating year. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 06:07, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea, so I added a few. --Wikiwatcher1 (talk) 06:52, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Garbo

[edit]

"In 1925, a young Greta Garbo... was brought over from Sweden at Mayer's request, as he saw how she looked in still photos."

Why would Mayer need still photos? He (or his minions in Europe) could view Garbo in "The Atonement of Gösta Berling" or "Joyless Street", both very well known films at the time. According to other accounts, Mayer was in Europe in 1924/1925 to watch over the production of "Ben Hur" in Rome, and saw "Gösta Berling" - much more likely.

"A Swedish friend thought he would help her by contacting Thalberg, who then agreed to give her a screen test."

But if, as we were just told, Mayer brought her over after seeing still photos, why would Thalberg need to be maneuvered in order to arrange a screen test?

She didn't need any screen test, as she was already a (minor) star.

"According to author Frederick Sands... "the studio arranged to fix her teeth, made sure she lost weight, and gave her an English tutor.""

She had already lost weight, Stiller saw to that. She's not overweight in "Joyless Street", on the pictures taken on the ship to the US or in the Arnold Genthe portraits taken in New York (before she ever went to Hollywood). Whatever work might have been done on her teeth was very minor (see pictures from early 1920s). 2A02:AA1:1168:EF21:11FB:B8A8:7CE2:1C3C (talk) 20:42, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
